The Indian market gets flooded every few days with a new brand of mobile phones. The choices out there are enumerable.

Well here is another company, a Chinese manufacturer, that has just recently entered the Android Smart phone market in India.

It’s called Gionee, and their phone is called the “Dream D1.”

Let talk features:

  • The phone sports a 4.65 inch Super AMOLED HD Plus (1280×720 pixels), 316 ppi with Gorilla Glass 2 Protection.
  • 1.2 GHz Cortex A7 Quad-Core Processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB Internal Memory, expandable to 32GB via the SD Card slot.
  • Dual SIM (2G and 3G)
  • 2100mAh Battery
  • 8MP Rear Camera
  • 1MP Front Camera
  • Super HD Video Recording
  • Connectivity of 3G, WiFi, BlueTooth and GPS

Now all those features seem pretty fancy for a new brand in the market, and they are premium. The exterior of the phone is styled very well and does show off some superior build quality when compared to the other “off”-brands in the market. The gun-metal finish adds a classy effect to the phone and the textured back panel does not feel tacky by any means.

Unlike the conventional power button placement on the right, the Dream D1 has the power button located on the left hand side of the phone and the volume controls are located on the right hand side. The top part of the phone gets the mini-USB charging point and the bottom gets a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, which is pretty conveniently placed when it comes to using the headphones. There are no touch sensitive keys present on the body of the device, the navigation keys are integrated into the screen which does make the device slightly sleeker than it’s competition. The phone is extremely light and feels easy to use with even 1 hand.

On opening up the rear panel we can see the allocated slots for the 2 SIM cards and for the micro-SD card. The company supplies customers with a 16GB SD card upon purchase of the phone.

The Battery can been seen as well, and is placed securely in it’s setting.

The Super AMOLED display looks fantastic and really does make the colors pop. it comes with stock 316 ppi which makes for watching videos or movies on the device very entertaining. The screen size seems just perfect, not too big or too small. The phone fits easily into your pocket and does not feel like a burden to carry around.

The phone is powered by a Mediatek MT6589 quad-core 1.2GHZ Cortex A7 processor combined with a 1GB of RAM which nowadays is usually found on all budget devices in today’s market. The 1GB RAM seems to suffice when it comes to playing games or watching videos on the device.

After performing a Benchmark Test we can see the result here:-

The phone performs well compared to the market competition. AnTuTu does give the phone benchmark a rating of 4.5 stars.

The user-interface seems to be slightly cluttered but Gionee has done a good job incorporating certain apps into the UI as compared to other companies that just load the custom UI and un-required bloatware onto the device. There is some lag when it come to the transitions and it feels as if the UI is struggling a little. Apart from that everything was smooth.

The Game play on the phone was great. There were no glitches in anyway at all and the ease of play is something we enjoyed when it came to gaming on this phone.

The phone comes with an in-built memory of 4GB which is expandable to 32GB with the help of a micro-SD card.

A feature that Gionee has incorporated into the phone is the “Power-Saver” mode. This allows the user to adjust the amount of power used by the device based on the brightness, connectivity, Data usage etc.

The Speakers are loud and clear and can be tweaked by using the “Speaker Boost” App.

The Camera is an 8MP camera that has adjustable settings that allow the user to control the exposure, picture effects and white balance. The user can also switch between 40 continuous shots or 99 continuous shots. In video mode, Super HD video capture is available. The camera is not too great when it comes to performance in low light. A lot of noise can be seen while trying to take an image. Nonetheless, the 8MP camera does a good job in taking the pictures you need.

Gionee also supplies a customer with 2 back cases for the phone in red and beige colors. There is also a screen protector present in the box. Gionee gives a 365 day warranty on the Dream D1.

All in all, priced at Rs.17,999/- the Gionee Dream D1 seems to be a good phone to buy in the sub-Rs.20,000/- segment. The build quality is great, finish is clean and the most appealing part is the super AMOLED display that creates a very full and enriched user experience. Everything looks better on an HD display.

    Dear sir,
Recently, I bought Gionee Dream D1 from Dealer of Gujarat.
Before buying , I checked all reviews & videos posted on net regarding the product. I like all features & configurations of Dream D1, and put order of it. When I received the mobile, I noticed that the company hadn’t provide 2 Pcs. Of  Back Covers which are very much useful to protect sides & corners of mobile Case. Instead of back covers , I got 1 Flap Cover which is not very much convenient to me. I would like to request you to send me those Back covers as it is mentioned in all reviews of Dream D1. I also like to request you to update the OS.
    Thanking you.

    Regards,
    Maulesh
